News to Know: Explosive device found and an old fire truck

PARSONS, Kan. — Labette County deputies responded to 3803 W Main Street in Parsons about a suspicious SUV. When deputies arrived they found 3 people coming out of a storage unit that did not belong to them. Authorities searched the SUV and found a pipe bomb. Two of the people — Daniel Mitchell and Holly Vanwinkle — were arrested on active warrants.

JOPLIN, Mo. — Missouri Southern partners with Active Minds to “Send Silence Packing” in the oval. Active Minds is a suicide prevention non-profit working to change the culture around mental health. The “Send Silence Packing” display features stories of those who were affected by suicide. Those stories are attached to backpacks that are then laid out across the lawn and hallway for students to read.

PARSONS, Kan. — Great Plains Industrial Park in Parsons celebrates its 10th anniversary. The celebration gives businesses an opportunity to hear about the future of the industrial park and to meet stakeholders who are partnering with the Great Plains Development Authority. At the event — Park My Fleet announced their partnership with GPIP.

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The city of Carthage has a newly restored fire truck from 1939 and it could even make an appearance at the Maple Leaf Festival parade this weekend. It has a pump, water tanks, and ground and aerial ladders on it. The truck’s owner says — one of the interesting things about this project is how many local craftsmen have been helping to restore the truck.
