Lions prepare for road test at Central Missouri

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Lions hit the road this weekend to face the the Central Missouri Mules.

The Lions are 4-2 in the first six weeks of the season, while the Mules are 1-5.

“This is one of those games where you have to look past the record,” says MSSU head coach Atiba Bradley, “They’ve already played Pitt State. They’ve already played Washburn. They’ve already played Nebraska-Kearney. They’ve already played Northwest Missouri and they’ve already played Emporia State. All of these teams are toward the top of the league. They’re not getting blown out and they’re not getting ran off the field. They’re a quality opponent, they’ve just had a tough schedule. They’ve had a couple tough road games. They’ve played at Pitt State and they’ve played at Nebraska-Kearney. Those are not easy road trips.”

The Missouri Southern defense will try to continue to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks this weekend.

The Lions are #2 in the MIAA with 17 sacks in just six games. Central Missouri has allowed 14 sacks in the first six weeks.

“We’ve got some guys that have talent, and that helps, but these guys have tremendous motors,” Bradley says of his pass rush, “They just keep going. A lot of the sacks we’re getting are on pursuit or counter moves, so that’s helping us a bunch. I think our back end is also starting to come together a little bit. We’re starting to give some coverage pictures that confuse some quarterbacks. It’s allowed our defensive ends and our defensive line to kind of pin their ears back.”

Saturday’s game begins at 1:30 PM in Warrensburg, Missouri.
