Gorillas aim to keep ground game rolling at Emporia State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Pittsburg State Gorillas travel to Emporia State this weekend, aiming to stay unbeaten.

The Gorillas are 3-0 this season and are up to #14 in the national rankings

Pitt State aims to keep the ground game going this weekend, after rushing for a season-high 232 yards last week in their 49-14 win over Northeastern State.

“It makes me feel great. As an offensive lineman, I want to run the football,” says Pitt State offensive lineman Kory Woodruff on last week’s big rushing numbers, “Pass blocking is great. We have Chad, who is a wonderful quarterback. He’s been throwing the ball around the field, but as an offensive lineman, I want to run the ball. It brings a little more of a physical aspect to it. Pass protection isn’t passive, but at the same time you’re going backwards. You kind of have to be the nail in a sense, where in the run game you get to be the hammer.”

“We’ve had our moments where we still need to improve, but it felt like we ran the football better in the last game,” says head coach Brian Wright on his offensive line, “We have to continue with that balance on offense to be good, and it all starts with those guys.”

That offensive line feels like it’s been improving each week.

“We’re finally starting to get healthy. Last week we pretty much had everyone practicing. Those first two weeks we were banged up a lot,” Woodruff says, “They say the great ones figure it out. We want to be great, so we’re going to figure it out.”

Pitt State’s game against Emporia State will begin at 1 PM on Saturday in Emporia.
