Ronald McDonald House discusses its community outreach

JOPLIN, Mo. – To celebrate the International Day of Charity, KOAM’s Janna Hautala visited Joplin’s Ronald McDonald House to discuss the importance of the worldwide organization.

The Joplin location serves people from both Mercy and Freeman hospitals.

“Ronald McDonald House has been helping families for 24 years now. We stop by to talk about the importance of this home away from home,” said Annette Thurstin, RMH Director.

The organization says they have over 400 houses all over the world, including hospital rooms and mobile homes in different cities.

“Families can stay here one night or families have been with us for as many as 129 nights so it all depends but during the time they stay with us we try and provide all the resources that they need,” stated Thurstin.

An upcoming event to benefit the organization is the Big Red Shoe Run on September 24th.

Local volunteer Deborah Kelly says families that stayed with the RMH in the past are likely to return to participate or volunteer during the event.

“It is really nice to hear how much they appreciated their time here,” said Kelly.
