Pittsburg Fire receives life-saving equipment to better prepare first responders

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Pittsburg Fire Department is now equipped with a life-saving tool for victims of cyanide poisoning caused by smoke inhalation.

Cyanide is a result of combustion. Every time someone inhales smoke they get cyanide in the bloodstream, according to the PFD.

“This is another technology we can add to the many tools we use at the scene of a fire,” says Pittsburg Fire Chief Dennis Reilly.

Cyanide poisoning can develop rapidly for those suffering from smoke inhalation, making every second count. Having these cyanide antidote kits on-hand could mean the difference between life and death for a civilian or first responder.

“Immediate administration of the antidote dramatically increases survivability and improves outcomes,” said Reilly. “It’s a safeguard to offer the best chance of survival for potential victims.”
