Joplin man takes plea deal in 2021 Ewert Park stabbing

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. – A homeless Joplin man takes a plea deal for a non-fatal stabbing in July of last year.

33-year-old Joe Guevara pleaded guilty to first-degree assault on Monday. Jasper County Circuit Judge David B. Mouton sentenced him to 11 years in prison. The court credited him about a year (404 days) for time served in the Jasper County Jail.

The stabbing happened on July 4, 2021, at Ewert Park at 900 E. 5th Street in Joplin.

Someone called 911 to report a stabbing. Officers responded and found an adult male with multiple stab wounds. He survived his injuries.

Joplin police investigated and were able to identify the suspect. They arrested him near 5th Street and Kentucky Avenue that day. They identified him as Joe L. Guevara, 32, and was listed as being homeless.
