KSNF/KODE — On July 9, 2021, California’s Death Valley reached 130 degrees Fahrenheit according to an automated measuring system there, representing one of the highest temperatures ever recorded on the planet.

The world record, also recorded at Death Valley, was 134 degrees in July 1913.

More than 210 degrees Fahrenheit separates the highest and the lowest temperatures on record in the United States, the third-largest country in the world.

As some states are infamous for having blistering hot summers, others become inundated by winter storms and frigid cold.

Stacker” consulted 2021 data from the NOAA’s State Climate Extremes Committee (SCEC), to illustrate the hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in each state; specifically Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas.

For those three states, Stacker also reveals the all-time highest 24-hour precipitation record and all-time highest 24-hour snowfall.

MISSOURI

All-time highest temperature: 118° F (Warsaw 1 on July 14, 1954)

  • All-time lowest temperature: -40° F (Warsaw 1 on Feb. 13, 1905)
  • All-time highest 24-hour precipitation: 18.18 inches (Edgerton on July 20, 1965)
  • All-time highest 24-hour snowfall: 24 inches (Jackson on Feb. 25, 1979)

Warsaw is one of two cities in the United States that holds the record for both the highest and lowest temperatures recorded in a state (the other is Millsboro, Delaware).

During the 1965 flood in Edgerton, four people died and 729 residences were damaged or completely destroyed.

Approximately 433,000 acres of agricultural land flooded during the deluge.

The total damages the floods inflicted on properties cost Missouri $24,292,900.

KANSAS

All-time highest temperature: 121° F (Fredonia on July 18, 1936)

  • All-time lowest temperature: -40° F (Lebanon on Feb. 13, 1905)
  • All-time highest 24-hour precipitation: Data not available
  • All-time highest 24-hour snowfall: 30 inches (Pratt 3NW on March 28, 2009)

Pratt, a city with a population of 6,835 people, had recorded the state’s heaviest snowfall on March 28, 2009.

A spring snowstorm had resulted in a whopping 30 inches of snow falling within one day in Pratt.

ARKANSAS

All-time highest temperature: 120° F (Ozark on Aug.10, 1936)

  • All-time lowest temperature: -29° F (Gravette on Feb.13, 1905)
  • All-time highest 24-hour precipitation: 14.06 inches (Big Fork 1 SSE on Dec. 3, 1982)
  • All-time highest 24-hour snowfall: 25 inches (Corning on Jan. 22, 1918)

“The Great Heat Wave of 1936” affected around 15 states during its three-week run that brought temperatures above 100 degrees.

Still, Ozark topped the charts by reaching 120 degrees.

Also known as the “1936 North American Heat Wave,” it exacerbated the levels of human suffering during the ongoing Great Depression.

Little Rock in Arkansas had to endure its hottest summer in 2010 between June and August when the temperature went above 90 degrees for two months.

Works of art from New York debuted at Joplin gallery

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin’s “Spiva Center For The Arts” opened two new exhibits tonight (7/29).

One in particular features over two dozen works from a renowned New York artist.

Tonight, people got their first chance to see three rooms full of work from artist and sculptor, Rob Mango.

For the next three months, 27 pieces of Mango’s artwork will be on display.

Spiva Exhibits Director, Shaun Conroy said this new exhibit will have a special meaning at Spiva’s current location.

“It’s a great exhibit, we’re glad to have him and like I said, we’ve been looking to have this exhibit for some time, and you know, this is a special exhibit because this is the last exhibit in this building before we move into the Cornell Complex,” said Exibits Director, Shaun Conroy with Spiva Center For The Arts.

“I could see Joplin becoming the center of contemporary art in the Midwest, it really could happen, I mean, when I looked at it, my first impression was of the Whitney Museum in New York, so I just have a strong feeling about art in Joplin,” said artist and sculptor, Rob Mango.

Rob Mango will be part of an artist talk at Spiva tomorrow (7/30).

The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the Spiva location in downtown Joplin (222 West 3rd Street).

Spiva also opened another exhibit tonight, showcasing Joplin’s history in artform, painted by various artists.

30,000+ expected at downtown Miami festival

MIAMI, Okla. — A festival centered around music and “The Mother Road” kicks off in downtown Miami, Oklahoma tonight (7/29).

The city hosted their 2nd annual “Route 66 Heritage Festival” in downtown.

The two-day event, which takes place along Miami’s Route 66, features several music artists, vendors, food trucks and a car show.

Heritage Fest takes up four city blocks on Miami’s “Mother Road.”

Organizers say this hometown event is meant to showcase the history of Miami.

“Miami always had the music tradition, and we wanted to expose that to people and start using that as something that we could get to make Miami a better place, so between the tribes, Route 66 and the City of Miami, it just all came together, and it’s getting bigger every year and it’s getting really good every year,” said Route 66 Heritage Festival Volunteer, Bobby Poole.

30,000 people attended the two-day, 2021 inaugural Route 66 Heritage Festival last summer.

Event organizers expect an even greater turn out this weekend (7/29-7/30).

Route 66 Heritage Fest continues tomorrow (7/30) from 9:30 a.m. to midnight, and will include “American Idol – Season 17” winner, Laine Hardy who will take to the main stage.

"Suspicious activity" at Indigo Sky prompts evacuation

OTTAWA COUNTY, Okla. — Early this morning, the casino security director for Indigo Sky was alerted to a possible threat on the casino floor.

After discussing the possible threat with local law enforcement, who were called to Indigo Sky, it was decided that the threat was credible enough to issue an full evacuation order of the property.

Around 6:30 a.m. (7/30) all those on the casino floor, including hotel guests and employees, were forced to evacuate the building.

Law enforcement officers worked for two hours this morning, until ultimately determining that the threat was not eminent.

The “all-clear” was issued at 8:30 a.m., allowing everyone to re-enter the building.

Melanie Heskett, General Manager for Indigo Sky, attributes their emergency response plan, which was activated this morning, and worked well to deal with the credible threat at hand.

“We always preach to our team; see something, say something, and that was what happened this morning, we did get it from a team member off the casino floor, and they reported it immediately, so they did exactly what they were told to do,” said Indigo Sky General Manager, Melanie Heskett.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the Wyandotte Nation Police and the Eastern Shawnee Police Department all showed up to assist.

JoMoCon hosts inaugural event

JOPLIN, Mo. – JoMoCon kicked off in Joplin this morning for its first-ever event.

The event focused on the following categories:

  • pop culture
  • anime
  • sci-fi
  • fantasy
  • gaming

Officials say the event is similar to Comic-Con.

“I think it is really cool because normally, we would have to travel out of town or out of state and so this is the first one in town, so it is nice,” said Tobi Crow, local Cosplayer.

The event also featured voice actor John Gremillion who is featured on My Hero Academia and One Piece.

Tickets cost $10 and a portion of the proceeds went towards Turnaround Ranch in Joplin.

KCU in Joplin hosts White Coat Ceremony for students

JOPLIN, Mo. – KCU in Joplin today hosted two White Coat Ceremonies for students starting their medical school journey.

The university says the ceremony is special to KCU in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that demonstrated an urgent need for healthcare personnel.

One of the White Coat recipients, Andrew Greek, stated “I ust worked so hard to get here and to have this moment to kind of symbolize all of our hard work and our dedication up till now was fascinating. But also you know, it kind of symbolizes a lot of hard work to go, so.”

Students receiving White Coats today will go on to study Osteopathic Medicine.

Boat Crash in Lake of the Ozarks claims one life; three injured

CAMDEN COUNTY, Mo – One boater is dead after hitting heavy wake and ejecting from the vessel; Police say three others sustained injuries.

Deputies say Drew Baugh, 25, Brett Wessel, 36, Timothy Ridens, 41, and Keith Chandler 50 were involved in the crash.

The injury report indicates Timothy Ridens, 41, passed away at the scene after driving too fast for the conditions.

The Camden County Medical Examiner pronounced Ridens deceased at around 11:00 a.m. on July 29.

Officers say two passengers with serious injuries and one with minor injuries were transported to Lake Regioal Hospital.

Christian Heady Foundation, ’88 Strong Passing It On’, Inaugural 5K, Kickball and Cornhole Tournaments

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Doug and Leslie Heady lost their son, Christian, to cancer in 2021. Many followed on social media through Christian’s Journey.

To continue Christian’s legacy the inaugural ‘88 Strong Passing It On’ is being held on Sept 17. “Fundraiser to help families who are dealing with a child with cancer in our area,” Doug and Leslie state.

There are three different events through the day.

Local organization celebrates Black History mural completion

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Langston Hughes Cultural Society celebrates the completion of its Black History and Performing Arts Mural.

Located at 1st & Main Street, the mural depicts show performers who played in or visited Joplin. As some of you may know, Langston Hughes and Charles McPherson were both born in Joplin.
