News to Know: Kansas courts rule on gerrymandering, and Pride month boosts sales for Independence business

TOPEKA, Kan. – The highest court in Kansas has declared that the state constitution does not prohibit partisan gerrymandering. On Tuesday the justices split four-three in explaining their reasons for previously upholding a Republican congressional redistricting law. The State Supreme court issued only a brief opinion last month in approving the new congressional map. The court’s majority said the Kansas constitution permits legislators to consider partisan factors in redistricting.

JOPLIN, Mo. – Joplin residents get an update on the process to add East Town to the Historic National Register. The Broadway district of East Town has now been nominated to that register. If it becomes approved it would recognize the significance and history of the area to its community, preserve and archive the generated research, and allow for special funding for the district. PITTSBURG, Kan. – According to the CDC more than 600 heat-related deaths occur annually in the U.S. One of the most common places is at construction work sites. The construction crew of RFB Construction in Pittsburg say they combat the heat by wearing hats, thin long-sleeved shirts, staying hydrated with water and electrolytes, and adjusting start and stop times.
