Mr. Marvin Ray Wescott

Marvin R. Wescott formerly of Carthage passed away 10:22 Saturday evening May 28, 2002. Marvin was born to Elvis Wescott Sr. and Margurite Wescott(Hamilton) on July 7, 1937 in Carthage Mo.. Marvin was a longtime Jasper County resident. He worked for the Division of Employment Security for several years before retiring in 1998. Some of Marvin’s favorite pastimes were square-dancing and a occasional casino trip. He also enjoyed football,bowling and boxing.
Marvin married Fern O’Dell Pippin on Sept. 17,1977 in Carthage Mo. she survives
Additional survivors would include one daughter, Cathy Hayes(Chet) of Kimberling City Mo.
One brother, Gary Wescott Carthage MO. Two sisters Velma and Lois. Three grandchildren Kristen Martin(Scott),Jason Benward(Darcy),Meggie Etris(Josh). Eight great grandchildren Sam Martin,Ben Martin,Zac Martin,Nova Etris,Charley Benward,Maverick Etris,Harrison Benward,Cooper Benward.
Marvin was preceeded in death by one son Reggie Pippin in 2014, one granddaughter Reggina Pippin in 1988. Two brothers Steve Wescott,Elvis Wescott Jr. and .one sister Carolyn Payne
Graveside services will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday June 2, 2022 at Weaver Cemetery Oronogo Mo.

Dick White

Richard “Dick” Leroy White, age 90, of Columbus, Kansas, passed away May 24, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family.

Richard was born to John and Leonel (Cunningham) White on May 27, 1931 in Newton County, Missouri. During his life, Richard served our country for over 30 years in the US Navy. He was a Veteran of the Korean War. Continuing his life of service, he also worked as a Highway Patrolman for over 30 years and rode with the motorcycle unit when stationed at Junction City, KS. He also enjoyed training new recruits as they came on the highway patrol.

Richard was active in the Masonic Lodge Mirza Shrine and Scottish Rite, VFW, American Legion, NRA, Kansas Peace Officer’s Association, and Lion’s Club. He enjoyed farming, cattle, welding and his family. He was a strong man who spoke his mind however he reached out and helped many.

He was united in marriage to Alice M. Wilson October 1, 1952 in Huntsville, Arkansas. She survives of the home. He graduated from Columbus High School with the class of 1949. He attended Pittsburg State University, and later Missouri Southern, taking criminal justice courses.

In addition to his wife Alice, Richard is survived by three daughters, Alyce Fortnoff of Canton, Ohio, Lora Brehe (husband Carl) of Holt Summit, Missouri, and Robin Adams (husband Dan) of Enid, Oklahoma; one sister Myrtle Stone of Long Beach, California, 10 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Minnie White, and brothers John White and Ted White.

Cremation arrangements are being handled through Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus, Kansas. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Derfelt Funeral Home. Sheriff David Groves will officiate.

Daniel Lynn Brewster

Daniel Lynn Brewster, aged 75, died May 26, 2022 at Freeman West in Joplin MO. Dan was born to Frank and Kathryn Brewster in Joplin MO and grew up in Baxter Springs, KS with 3 brothers where he graduated high school. He received his bachelors degree at Pittsburg State University and a law degree from Washburn University in Topeka, KS. First practicing law he later was elected a district court judge in Labette County, where he raised his family. Dan was married to Kay Lewis Brewster from 1969 until her death in 2016. Dan remarried in 2018 to Janice Gandy Brewster. He had many hobbies and interests including playing guitar and piano, fishing, golf and traveling. Visiting many states in the US he also ventured to England, Turkey, Egypt and Mexico, just to name a few, as well as serving as a board member for the Baxter Historical Society and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation.
Dan is survived by his wife Janice, daughter, Robyn Henry, son-in-law Joe Henry, son Justin, brother David, as well as sister-in-laws, Judy Brewster and Betty Brewster, as well as many nieces, nephews and grands. He will be missed and remembered by many.
Services will be held graveside at Baxter Springs City Cemetery, 166 West Ave, Baxter Springs, KS at 2pm on Tuesday, May 31st, 2022. A gathering is to follow at David and Judy Brewster’s home, 2380 W. Hwy 166, Baxter Springs, KS for light refreshments and fellowship.

Tom Hartman

Samuel “Tom” Hartman, age 90 of Webb City, passed away on May 27, 2022 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin. Tom was born on April 9, 1932 to David “Luke” and Hettie (Clyburn) Hartman in Leeper, MO. Family was very, very important to Tom, and he enjoyed them more than anything.

Tom proudly served in the US Air Force, serving in the Korean War. For most of his working life, he was a salesman for Bossi Sales Co. in Springfield until his retirement in 1995. Tom married his loving wife Sally on August 1, 1975 in Alba. He enjoyed fishing, but most of all his favorite sports teams- St. Louis Cardinals baseball, Kansas City Chiefs football, and the Mizzou basketball team.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luke and Hettie, a brother Leslie Hartman, and a sister LaVaughn Ryker of Carthage. He was also preceded in death by a stepson, Jeff Grosse of Aurora. Tom is survived by his wife, Sally of Webb City; sisters Dorothy Provins of Joplin, Brenda Vaile of Carthage, and Rose Beaver of Springfield; children Scott Hartman and wife LeighAnn of Joplin, Kent Hartman and wife Tammie of Goodman, Lisa Robinson and husband Danny of Webb City, and Greg Grosse and wife Kammi of Ozark; grandchildren Chassity, Shanda, Laurie, Jennifer, Echo, Wayde, Janae, Hannah, and Morgan; and two step-granddaughters Jaclynne and Katelyn.

A graveside service for Tom will be held at 10am on Friday, June 3rd at the Webb City Cemetery with Jim Wickencamp officiating. Following the graveside, there will be a visitation at the Webb City Mining Days Building from 11am until noon.

Jimmey Lee Bartlett

 

Jimmey Lee Bartlett, age 65, resident of Louisburg, Kansas (formerly Fort Scott, Kansas), died Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Olathe Medical Hospital. He was born October 31, 1956, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the son of Dorothy L. (Adams) Boyd and Leroy Bartlett. He graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1974, Fort Scott Community College in 1978, and attended one year at Pittsburg State in business. He served in the US Army in 1974, stationed in Germany as a Pershing Missile Crewman (Secret Clearance) as Expert M16/Grenade. He retired after 33 years from the US postal service (APWU union member). Jimmey enjoyed the outdoors, TV shows, and his family.

Survivors include his four children: Jason Bartlett (wife Angela) of Louisburg, Kansas, Justin Bartlett (Amanda) of Key West, Florida, Seth Bartlett of Mission, Kansas, and Amber Bartlett of Leesburg, Virginia; siblings: Cindy Smith (husband Richard) of Fort Scott, Kansas, Lori Porter (husband Russell) of Tuttle, Oklahoma, Charles D. Smith Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, Rodney Boyd (wife Rebekah) of Mustang, Oklahoma; grandchildren: Kallee Bartlett, Kaven Bartlett, Hunter Bartlett, Gunnar Bartlett, and London Bartlett; nieces and nephews: Ashley Smith, Jeff Smith, Sean Smith, Levi Trimmell (wife Kyla), Casey Porter, Cade Porter, Brandon Smith, Shelby Smith, Bailey Smith, Tegan Loya (husband Eduardo), Ryder Boyd, Rusty Boy;, great nieces and nephews: Abram, Amelia, and August Trimmell, Rosalind Loya, Karter Boyd. He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy L. Boyd, his father R. Wayne Boyd and Leroy Bartlett, his brothers Daniel and David Boyd.

A celebration visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm, Monday, June 6, 2022, at the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main St. Fort Scott, KS 66701. Burial will follow at the Fort Scott National Cemetery at 12:30 pm. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard. Velma Rea (Grandma) Landrum

Velma Rea (Grandma) Landrum, 85, a resident of Fairland, Oklahoma passed away at home on Thursday, May 26, 2022.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 31, 2022 from 6-8:00 PM at Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairland.

Elda Leo Turner

Elda “Slim” Turner, 89, passed away at his home in Nevada, MO on Friday, May 27, 2022.  Slim was born on November 23, 1932 in Stockton, MO to Elmer Lee and Sarah Francis (Fisher) Turner.  He married Jimmy Ann Kanupp on January 8, 1996 in Las Vegan, NV and she preceded him in death on August 30, 2021.

Slim was raised in Stockton and graduated from Stockton High School Class of 1950.  He served in the U. S. Air Force from February 6, 1953 to December 1, 1954 during the Korean War.  Slim came back to Nevada and worked as a plumber at the Nevada State Hospital for 25 years until his retirement in 1978.

Survivors include his son, Terry Turner (Lorraine); his daughter, Brenda Kerr (Robert), Nevada; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.   In addition to his wife, Jimmy Ann, and his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Scott Turner; and four brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Megan Allen officiating.  Interment with military honors will be in National Cemetery, Ft. Scott, KS at 12:30 p.m.  The family will receive friends from 9-10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Barbara L Pritchard

Barbara L. Pritchard of Miami, OK passed from this life Friday, May 27, 2022 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO. She was 79.

Barbara was born March 1, 1943 in Cedar Rapids, IA to Howard and Katherine Walters. She had lived in Miami area for the past 32 years. She was a homemaker.

Barbara was preceded in death by 1 son, David Pritchard, her parents, 2 brothers, Keith Walters and Howard Walters, Jr.

Survivors include her husband Medgar (Red) Pritchard of the home, 3 sons, Kevin Pritchard and wife Kory of Puerto Rico, Daniel Pritchard and wife Holly of Joplin, MO and Matthew Pritchard and wife Lacy of Joplin, MO, 1 daughter Rebecca Danell and husband Brandon of Grove, OK, 1 brother, Roger Walters of AZ, 1 sister Molly George and husband Bruce of Carterville, MO, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Marjorie Lee Webb

Marjorie Lee Webb, 102, loving aunt, great-aunt, great-great aunt, educator, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, in Dallas, Texas. Marjorie was born in Miller, Missouri, on October 14, 1919, to Warren Lee and Fay (Richesin) Webb.

Marjorie’s legacy began as a bossy big sister, later as a woman who became both an advocate for herself and a lifelong learner, all of which were fundamental to her ability to help those less fortunate. She became a professor of law but found her calling as a high school teacher in Debate, English and Government. She was known for believing in the value of democracy, and the importance of instilling pride in our country and its best civic values.

Marjorie’s long life was full of many accomplishments. She began her commitment to public service while attending Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. At age 24, she received a Presidential Appointment from Franklin D. Roosevelt to oversee the US Post Office in Miller. She was the only female faculty member at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and the first person elected to act as Trustee to the Kansas Public Employee Retirement System as Teacher Representative. Marjorie was the first woman to be elected head of the Democratic Party for Johnson County, Kansas, where she served 20 years advising and directing candidates. In 2017, Marjorie was inducted to The Kansas Teacher Hall of Fame. Her contributions included the authorizing of an amendment to the National Education Association Constitution and serving on the NEA Peace and Justice Caucus. Marjorie always referred to herself as “self-reliant” because she knew she could take care of both herself and others.

In 2013, she moved to Dallas, Texas, to become a vital part of the lives of her great-great nephews, Welzie, Jett, and Cale Jemente, and later Miller (named in honor of the family’s hometown) and great-great niece, Mary Catherine Jemente.

Marjorie is survived by two sisters-in-law, Juanita Webb of Fort Worth, Texas and Suzanne Webb of Ashburn, Virginia and a host of nieces, nephews (including greats and great-greats), plus too many friends to count.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, Warren, and Fay; three brothers, Welzie Webb, Robert Webb, and Murray Webb and nephew Michael Lee Webb.

A graveside service under the direction of the Morris-Leiman-Mosher Funeral Home in Miller, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 30, 2022, at the Webb Cemetery west of Miller.

Patricia Jean Platt

Patricia Jean Platt (Shumway) passed from this world into her Saviors arms on May 27, 2022. She was born June 30, 1937 to Roy and Theresa (Peevy) Shumway in Lake Odessa, Michigan.
Pat loved the Lord and was saved as a young girl at North Street Bible Church in Jackson, Michigan. Her favorite verse from the Bible was Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boost”. Pat and Dick were long time members of the First Baptist Church in Miami.
After graduation from Jackson High school in 1955, she worked various jobs until she met the man she prayed for, Richard (Dick) Platt. They were married on December 24, 1966 and were soul mates for 49 years until Dick’s passing.
They lived in several different states before settling in Miami, Oklahoma. Together, they started Oklahoma Leather, a business adventure of a lifetime.
Pat and Dick were blessed to be able to travel the world together, from Europe to Hong Kong to Australia to Hawaii. They had so many wonderful memories.
Pat found time to be a champion golfer, she was a member of the Women’s Golf Association, winning many awards and championships in and around the Miami Area. She also loved to play Bridge, Bowl, she was a member of the Women’s Bowling Association, and a member of the Republican Party. She also was a fabulous cook and loved to entertain.
Pat is preceded in death by her parents Roy and Theresa Shumway, her husband, Richard (Dick) Platt, and her sister Bonnie Clink. Pat had three sisters who loved her dearly and had many fun “Sisters Reunions” over the years. She is survived by two sisters Cathy and George Barrie of Georgia and Lois Jackson of MI. Pat and Dick were so proud of their children and loved each one. Her sons are Phil Platt (Debbie) of MI, Steve Platt (Joann) of MI, Michael Platt (Connie) of OK. Her daughters are Kathy Natschke (Frank) of MI, Lynn (John) Smith, of TX, Susan (Brad) Berry of OK. They spent many fun filled vacations with their kids and grandchildren. Steve’s girls are Katy and Courtney. Lynn’s children include Sarah Orcutt and her husband Evan, and Nicholas Nelson. Sue’s son is Seth Berry. Kathy’s children are Tony and Amanda. Great Grand children are Maybel Nelson, Maylee Orcutt and Anthony Reynolds. Her life also, included many nieces and nephews, friends, and other family members.
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 1, 2022 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Brown-Winters Funeral Home in Miami. Services will be Thursday, June 2, 2022 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Miami. Burial will be in Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery. Services are under the care of Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Miami. The family requests donations to be made to the First Baptist Church of Miami in Mrs. Platt’s memory.
