Homicide investigation, two women shot in Pittsburg, Kan.; Suspect in custody

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Late Friday night just before 11 p.m. Pitt Dispatch were alerted to reports of multiple gunshots in the 100 block of W 23rd.

Officers responded to the area and upon arrival located two female victims. Officers attempted to render medical aid to 40-year-old Stephanie Marie Short, of Pittsburg, who appeared to be suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.” —Lt. Rebekah Lynch, Pittsburg Police

First responders immediately rendered life-saving measures however Short was pronounced on scene.

A second victim, Velma Marie Cubie, 46, of Kansas City, Mo., also suffering gunshot wound was transported to a local hospital.  Lt. Lynch says the woman is currently stable.

James Cornell Hamilton, 39, of Pittsburg was taken into custody at the scene. He was booked in the Crawford County Jail on the following:

  • Murder 1st
  • Attempted Murder

Hamilton is being held on a $100,000 bond.

There is no further threat to the public.
