Standoff after burglary in Webb City, incident impacts school pickup time

WEBB CITY, Mo. – Authorities locate suspects after a burglary in Webb City, leading to a standoff that impacted pickup times at a nearby school.

The incident started this morning around 7:38 am. Webb City Police Officers responded to the 1600 block of South Oronogo for a reported burglary in progress.

Officers later found the vehicle they suspected was used in the burglary in the area of Fourth and Jefferson Streets in Webb City. According to Police Chief Donald Melton, they identified the suspects and found they were in a home in the 900 block of West First Street.

The Webb City Special Response Team showed up and surrounded that home. Chief Melton says team members then called over a public address system for the suspects to come out of the home. But, authorities say they refused.

Then, deputies with the Jasper County Special Response Team arrived on the scene. They threw “chemical munitions” into the home. That’s when police say two suspects came out. Police took them into custody.

The suspects are a 25-year-old male out of Webb City resident and a 28-year-old Carthage woman. Authorities are holding them at the Webb City Police Department pending the filing of formal charges.

Chief Melton did not release their names.

“We would like to thank the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, the Webb City Fire Department, and METS ambulance service for their assistance,” Chief Melton included in a media release.
