JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation says that hunters checked more than 36-thousand birds during the 2022 spring turkey season.
Hunters harvested 33,355 turkeys from April 18 to May 8 in various Missouri counties, with Franklin leading the way tagging 798 birds.
Callaway and Gasconade Counties were close behind with 614 and 606 turkeys harvested.
“Our annual wild turkey brood survey indicates that, at the statewide level, hens have been producing one or fewer poults, on average, for the past 6 years,” said MDC Turkey Biologist, Reina Tyl. “The cumulative effect of relatively poor production the last several years has been fewer turkeys and more challenging spring turkey hunting conditions.”
The MDC says youth hunters harvested nearly 3,000 birds during their turkey hunting season, bringing the total to 36,251.
