Weather causes crash; 3 Oklahoma University students pronounced dead

KAY COUNTY, Okla. – Oklahoma Highway Patrol says three men died in a crash after a semi-truck struck their vehicle on I-35.

According to Oklahoma University, the victims were all enrolled in the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences program at OU.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the crash occurred around 11:30 pm on April 29th.

Deputies say the students were traveling southbound on I-35 in a Volkswagen Tiguan when the vehicle began hydroplaning.

The Volkswagon then exited the road briefly before swinging back into the lane, blocking the outside roadway. Officers say the students’ vehicle became disabled at this time.

Soon after, a semi-truck traveling southbound struck the Volkswagon, pinning the three occupants inside for nearly six hours.

Officers pronounced Gavin A. Short, 19, Drake H. Brooks, 22, and  Nicholas K. Nair, 22 dead at the scene of the crash.

Police say the driver of the semi-truck was treated and released by the Blackwell Regional Hospital.
