Melba May Carrington, age 93, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away at 9:57 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. She was born September 28, 1928, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of John Rolla and Ruth May (Burns) Jones.
Melba was a 1947 graduate of Miller High School in Miller, Missouri. She was an administrative assistant for the Miller High School and the Colonial Hotel in Springfield, Missouri. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon.
On June 12, 1948, she married Edgar Wallace Carrington, in Miller, Missouri. He preceded her in death on August 9, 2019.
Melba is survived by two grandchildren, Brandy Garrett Kluthe and her husband, John, of Clinton, New Jersey and Bo Garrett and his wife, Anna, of La Cruz, Mexico; son-in-law, Butch Garrett, of Springfield, Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Garrett, Luke and Kira Kluthe, all of Clinton, New Jersey and one brother, Bill Jones and his wife, Marge, of Miller.
Melba was preceded in death by her parents, John, and Ruth; husband, Edgar; daughter, Patty Garrett; son Leland (Lee) Carrington and four brothers, John, George, Ray, and Albert Jones.
Melba enjoyed spending time with her many friends and family and especially loved a good game of Skip-Bo. She dedicated many years to volunteer work and was active in the Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an accomplished artist, avid reader and spreader of positivity.
A graveside service, under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, in Mt. Vernon, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2022, at the Sycamore Cemetery, northeast of Miller.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, in care of the funeral home.
