PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Pittsburg State Gorillas are in the final week of spring football drills.
“To this point, we’ve seen what we’ve wanted to see from the guys,” says head coach Brian Wright, “We’ve had 13 practices and we’ve thrown a lot at them in all three phases. Our guys have handled it well.”
Pitt State will finish up their spring schedule with their annual spring game – which is scheduled for Friday night at 6 PM at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburg.
The scrimmage will be offense vs. defense.
“We want to go offense vs. defense and get one more go at it, running our offensive plays and defensive plays,” Wright says, “We’ll see ones against ones and twos against the twos. We want to have the flexibility to rotate guys a certain way, so that’s why we’re sticking with that. We just don’t have a lot of depth still at a couple key areas, and we have a couple older guys that we want to take out of that scrimmage on Friday night pretty quickly as well. The offense vs. defense format sets us up the best to do that.”
The offense can score via touchdown (6), 2-point conversion (2), field goal (3), first down (1) and play of 20+ yards (1).
The defense can score via turnover (7), punt forced (1), tackle-for-loss (1), sack (3), 2-point conversion stop (2) and 4th-down stop (3). A 4th-down stop will score the defense 4 points if it’s inside the 15-yard line.
“You want to see the competition. You really want to see that game come down to the end and the final drive, as it did last year,” Wright says, “I’ve told the guys as the head coach and a coach on the offensive side, I want to see the yards tough to gain on offense and the defense isn’t making all of their big plays because we’re snapping the ball over the quarterbacks head. We want them making good plays too because they were in the right gap and tackling the ball carrier. I just want to see good, clean football.”
