Car wash change machine supports cut, vandals fail pulling it from structure

JOPLIN, Mo. – Joplin Police Department tell us they are investigating the crime of Vandalism and Felony Property Damage at a car wash that occurred early Tuesday morning.

Capt William Davis tells us about 7:50 a.m. officers responded to a call regarding a change machine that someone attempted to steal overnight at Crystal Clean Car Wash, 2202 S Main St., Joplin.

On scene it was visible some of the metal supports on a weight-bearing support were cut near the machine with a grinder device to cut metal.

They believe a vehicle was used to pull the machine away from the structure. However it did not break loose from the ceiling of the structure and was left swinging in the wind.

Workers on scene tell us they got a call Tuesday morning from a patron who said there were quarters all over the ground and the change machine was damaged.

The good Samaritan had his pockets all full of quarters to give to the clerk. He didn’t witness anything, he was just attempting to use the vacuum next to the change machine.

There is no official estimate on damages, however the roof is visibly damaged. It will be in the thousands to repair.

Detectives of the Joplin Police Dept are seeking the public assistance. If you saw anything suspicious the early morning hours of Tuesday, Feb 15, Capt Davis asks you to call 417-623-3131.
