VERNON COUNTY, Mo. – The Vernon County Historical Society hosts its annual election of board members and public education program, “La Guillanee” today.
The event featured a musical and educational presentation that explored the European, Canadian and French Creole roots of this Missouri tradition.
French Creole historian and fiddle player Dennis Stroughmatt attended to present festivities.
Originally a Celtic tradition, La Guillanee focuses on food and community during the winter. The tradition began in Europe as a gesture of charity over two thousand years ago. In France, La Guillanee also brought the community together to celebrate the New Year and French joie de vivre (joy of life).
