Helen Ruth Sims

Helen “Ruth” Sims, 92 of Girard, passed away into the loving arms of her
Savior, Jesus Christ, at 4:55 AM on Jan. 1, 2022 at Medicalodges of Frontenac. She
was born on January 9, 1929 in rural Pittsburg to Alice (née Scott) and Verna
Ashmore. She grew up in rural McCune and graduated from McCune High School.
She met Huston Cordell Sims, Jr. when they both worked at the K&N Cafe in Girard.
They married on June 27, 1947. They enjoyed 73 years of marriage until his death on
October 10, 2020. They lived in Wichita a few years then returned to Girard after
the birth of their first daughter, Linda. Ruth worked for several years at the
Western Insurance Agency in Fort Scott and then at the Crawford County Abstract
Company in Girard until she retired.
Ruth enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, singing and listening to music; especially
gospel, country, and big band music. When she was young, she occasionally sang
gospel and country music on the local radio. She also loved Bible studies and church
fellowship, going camping, but mostly she enjoyed spending time with her family. She
loved pets, especially dogs. She grew up in Baptist churches and was a member of
Girard Bible Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her young daughter, Linda Kay
Sims, her granddaughter, Melisa Ruth (née Harley) Augustson, and her seven
siblings: Bertha Thruston, Thelma Tripp, Freda Imhof, Mildred Marchbanks, Ernest
“Bud” Ashmore, Donald Ashmore and Dorothy Jackson.
She is survived by her daughters, Terri Harley and her husband, Maurice, and Debra
Sims; and by her grandson, Cordell Harley, and his wife Naamah and their five
children; Shylah, Caedmon, Alasdair, Caoimhe and Saoirse; all of Girard and by her
grandson, Seth Harley, of Pittsburg. She is also survived by several nieces and
nephews.
Services for Helen “Ruth” Sims will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at the Girard Bible Church with Pastor Noah Hartmetz officiating. Burial will follow in the Girard Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 until 7 Tuesday, January 4th at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard. Friends are invited to call after 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Girard Bible Church or Harry Hynes Hospice and these may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W. St. John, P.O. Box 258, Girard, Kansas 66743.
