32nd Street widening project set to get underway December 1st in Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. – Drivers in the southwest corner of Joplin are about to see some major road work over the next two years.

That project is the widening of West 32nd Street from Schifferdecker to Central City. We’ve kept you up-to-date on the project since it was announced earlier this year. In that time, utility relocation has been taking place and city officials say it’s now time for the big work to start. Starting December 1st, crews will begin clearing trees along 32nd street in preparation of heavier work set to begin later in December.

Public Works Director David Hertzberg says “You know if you’ve driver out there it’s a roller coaster and so there’s a lot of dirt being moved, cutting the high hills off and filling in the low valleys.”

The plan is to take 32nd street to three lanes, with extra space to take it to five lanes as the area continues to grow in the future. Utility relocation has already taken place along this stretch of 32nd street. The project is being done in two phases, with each of those broken into smaller groups to minimize the impact of road closures on the residents.
