Staying quite warm to hot for the next few days – Nick

Good early Wednesday morning, everyone. Our Tuesday turned out to be quite an interesting one. While we were expecting a slight chance of isolated t-storms during the day, it turned out that Mother Nature had other plans. The other night and into Tuesday morning, we were keeping an eye on a complex of rain and t-storms coming out of South Dakota and Nebraska. The complex of t-storms actually worked into the region late Tuesday morning and into the afternoon hours as it was weakening. With the outflow boundary ahead of the t-storms and the t-storms themselves, it helped us out with temperatures. After we started Tuesday out with lows in the upper 60s, we hit the upper 80s around lunchtime. Then, outflow and surrounding rain forced temperatures at Joplin Regional to dip into the middle 70s early in the afternoon. Even with the jump back into the upper 80s late in the afternoon, that kept us out of the 90s Tuesday and cooler compared to Monday.

As for the t-storms that worked through on Tuesday, it brought some accumulating rainfall to parts of the area. While the entire area averaged out at a tenth of an inch, radar estimates show pockets of rain that ranged between half an inch and 2 inches as the moderate to heavy rainfall worked through some parts of the area.

Breaking down our weather setup, the remnants of Ida will continue to produce flooding rainfall for parts of the Appalachian Mountain Range and parts of New England over the next few days. We still have a stationary front parked to the north of the region. Trailing that out west, there’s another cold front that will come into the play as we get into the start of the holiday weekend.

Looking upstairs at the jet stream level, the jet is sitting on top of the region with a northwesterly flow in place. While the upper-level ridge keeps trying to build back in, a few waves will be riding along the passing jet overhead.

With one of those weak waves working in early this morning, that should result in some isolated t-storms for a few spots in our eastern counties by the time we get the morning drive underway. Everyone will start off on a mild note with lows dropping to 69.

Once we get the afternoon underway, any slight rain chances we have will wrap up for the rest of the day. With partly sunny skies and a light easterly breeze, we’ll have to send highs back into the lower 90s across the region.

For tonight and Thursday morning, we’ll keep quiet under fair skies. That will allow temperatures to drop back into the lower 70s across the area. With another weak wave expected to pass by late Thursday morning and early Thursday afternoon, we won’t rule out a couple of isolated t-storms for a few spots in the area. Otherwise, our warm start to the afternoon will lead to highs returning into the lower 90s.

Let’s talk about the upcoming holiday weekend. The center of the upper-level ridge will stay just to our south over southeastern Arkansas. Due to its position, that will keep the jet stream close to the region as the cold front northwest of the region starts to push in. That will mean scattered t-storms for Friday as highs will still top out around 90 across the region. With this setup still in place for Saturday, we’ll hold on to periods of scattered t-storms throughout the day as highs top out in the upper 80s.

While it may not be the best start to the Labor Day Weekend with scattered t-storms in place, we’ll start to improve for Sunday and Monday. While the upper-level jet will stay just to the north of the region to keep us in the upper 80s for Sunday and middle 90s for Monday, the front at the surface will move on and take any rain chances temporarily out of the picture. As a result, we’ll keep dry under partly sunny skies for both Sunday and Monday.

Sticking with Doug’s pattern, the jet stream will stay close by while we keep an eye on some more upper-level waves. Another one on the way for Tuesday will keep a slight chance for isolated t-storms in the forecast as highs stay hot in the lower 90s. He has the rest of next week covered down below. Have a great Wednesday!

Nick

Next Wednesday-Saturday: Staying hot for Wednesday before we turn warm for the second half of the week.  Scattered storms Wednesday through Saturday.
