Betty Lou Culver of Miami, OK passed from this life Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at Freeman Health System in Joplin, MO. She was 80.
Betty was born May 18, 1941 in Fairfax, OK with her twin brother Billy to Brandy and Nancy (Sumpter) Culver.
She and Billy moved to Gentry, AR with their grandparents Carl C. and Elizabeth Ann Culver. In 1949 they moved to Wyandotte, OK where she and Billy attended the Seneca Indian School. They graduated from Chilocco Indian School in 1959.
Betty went to work at the Seneca Indian School in 1959 and worked there until the school was closed due to a Congressional Mandate in 1980.
She moved to Pawhuska where she made her home by the invitation of her aunt and uncle, W.P. “Bill” Culver to help take care of her Aunt Dorothy, who was in Pawhuska Nursing Home. While in Pawhuska Betty worked at Youth Services of Osage County for 12 years, the Pawhuska Nursing Home for 14 years and two home health care agencies. She took care of several people in their homes during this time also, three of her favorites being, Mr. Joe Sodertrom, Miss Irma Sweeden and Mr. Gordon Malog.
Betty was preceded by her twin brother Bill Culver Wyandotte and Grove, Eddie Culver, John Culver and sister Judy Turnagee and her grandparents who raised she and Bill.
Betty is survived by her sister Evelyn Faulkner of Carson City, NV, niece Carol Thurman and her husband Greg and their children Austin Winkler and Joseph Thurman, nephew, David Culver of Oklahoma City, OK, several nieces and nephews and cousins whom she helped to raise, Janet Robinson, Liz Thomas and Wylie Brodrick whom she considered her kids.
Betty worked as a Certified Child Care worker, Certified Nurse’s Aide and Secretary. She loved to read, sew, make quilts, work in the yard and above all help others.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 20, 2021 at Sycamore Chapel, south of Wyandotte, OK with Rev. Geoff Buffalo and Rev. John Bates officiating. Interment will follow in Wyandotte Cemetery in Wyandotte, OK with David Culver, Greg Thurman, Austin Winkler, Jared Dixon, Joseph Thurman and Larry Hamilton serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, OK. Services have been placed in the care of Paul Thomas Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Miami, OK.
