Gordon Lawton Walters, Jr.

Gordon Lawton Walters, Jr. of Grove, OK passed from this life Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Grandwood Assisted Living in Grove, OK. He was 96.

Gordon was born July 11, 1925 in Anthony, KS to Gordon and Ellen (Gray) Walters, Sr. He graduated from Anthony High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1944 and was discharged in 1946 as a Second Lieutenant. He trained in navigation at many Texas bases, San Marco, Hondo, and San Antonio. WWII ended the day before he was to be deployed with his team from Lincoln, NE. He then attended the University of Kansas in 1946 and graduated with Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 1949.

Gordon married Marie Bardwell in Parsons, KS on July 9, 1950. He was hired by Eagle Picher in Miami, OK in 1949 as an accountant and worked many years at its First National Bank and Cardin, OK offices. In 1960 became Business Manager for Miami Clinic and worked there until he retired in July 1987.

Gordon served as Ottawa County Election Secretary for several years. He was active in Miami Jaycees and served as President. He was also active with the Miami Senior Center and served as Treasurer and fund raiser for the new building, bowling leagues, NEO Booster Club and member of Miami First United Methodist Church. He was a regular at Miami High School and NEO College football and basketball games where he was a loyal supporter and booster.

He and his wife Marie enjoyed traveling and cruises with friends after retirement. He moved to Grandwood Assisted Living in Grove, OK in April 2016.

Gordon was preceded in death by his wife Marie, December 2014, his parents and brother-in-law in February 2014.

Survivors include his son, Ron Walters and wife Pearl of Grove, OK, his daughter, Karen Chapel of Dallas, TX, grandsons, Andy Chapel and wife Liz and Bret Chapel and wife Amy all of Dallas, TX, great- grandchildren Olivia, Sophie and Henry Chapel all of Dallas, TX, his sister, Myrna Williams of Harper, KS, two nieces, Diana Schmidt of Anthony, KS and Sheryl Beyermeyer of Harper, KS and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami, OK. Rev. Susan Rice will officiate. Military Rites will be conducted by Grove Veterans Ritual Team. Ron Walters, Andy Chapel, Bret Chapel, Robert Chapel, Paul Knight and Jim Arnold will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Paul Thomas Funeral Home Chapel in Miami, OK. In Lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions to Miami United Methodist Church. Services have been placed in the care of Paul Thomas Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Miami, OK.
