Charla Rene Dawes of Quapaw, OK passed from this life Sunday, August 1, 2021 at Global Higher Call Nursing Home in Quapaw, OK. She was 68.
Charla was born August 8, 1952 in Joplin, MO to Charles and Lorraine “Rene” (Mercer) Dawes. She had lived in Quapaw for over 30 years and a member of the Ottawa Tribe. She graduated from Southside High School in Fort Smith, AR in 1972 and received her Doctorate of Education from the University of Arkansas. She was a case manager for Oklahoma Department of Human Services. Charla was a member of the Inter Tribal Native American Church, Spring River Home Extension, former Second Councilman with Ottawa Tribe and the Order of the Eastern Star. She worked for many years with and as Ottawa Pow-Wow Committee Chair and Ottawa Children’s Christmas Party. Charla was a Razorback fan and season ticket holder for over 50 years.
Charla was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Kevin Dawes.
Survivors include her sister-in-law Sharon Dawes of Baxter Springs, KS, 1 niece, Kari Barrett and husband Ryan of Tahlequah, 1 nephew, J.C. Dawes and wife Stefanie of Quapaw, OK, great nieces and nephews, Avery Barrett, Noah Barrett, Emilee Craig, Lottie Dawes and Jacy Dawes.
Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Ottawa Indian Cemetery, southeast of Miami, OK. Native American Rites will be conducted by J.C. Dawes. Wyatt Chuckluck, Corey Scott, Christopher Wren, Pete Littlecook, Noah Barrett and Andy Smith will serve as pallbearers. Mona King, Beth Blalock, Sandy Bear, LeAnne Reeves and Mary Oyebi will serve as honorary pallbearers. Charla will lie in state at Quapaw Tribal Summer House at the Quapaw Tribal Grounds, southeast of Quapaw, OK.
