Janice Marilyn Sturgis, age 71 passed away at 7:18 pm, Friday, Jul 23, 2021 at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, MO following an illness.
Janice was born July 18, 1950 in Wichita, KS. Her parents were George Eugene and Sadie Marie (Saunders) Darnell. She had lived in the Baxter Springs area most of her life
She graduated from Riverton High School with the class of 1968. She began working in the medical field as a teenager at Oak Hill Hospital, Joplin, MO. She earned an LPN license and began working at Miami Baptist Hospital in Miami, OK retiring after 26 years of service.
Janice was a member of First Baptist Church, Riverton, KS. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, crocheting, and watching game shows and MASH on TV.
Janice was married to Terry Sturgis on October 26, 1982 in Oklahoma City, OK. He passed away July 21, 2021. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one child at birth.
Surviving are two step-sons, Edward Lee Sturgis, Baxter Springs Tim Sturgis (Nicole), Columbus, KS and; one brother Roy Darnell (Significant other, Terri Henson), Baxter Springs; two step-brothers, David Kreiger, Exeter, MO and Steven Kreiger, Baxter Springs; two step-sisters, Cherie Kafton, Joplin and Susan Parrott, California; and 6 grandchildren, Emily Sturgis and Landon Sturgis and their mother Stephanie August, Sierra Sturgis, Brooklynn Sturgis, Shayla Sturgis, and Arysta Sturgis; and one great-grandson, Leyton Sturgis.
Janice was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS for cremation. No services are planned at this time.
