Juanita M. Carnahan

Juanita M. Carnahan, 88, formerly of rural Altamont, passed away at 5:20 p.m., Monday, July 19, 2021, at Oswego Health and Rehab.

Juanita May Nading was born on April 7, 1933, to John Leander “Lee” and Viola May “Dodie” (Hall) Nading in rural Oswego. As a young girl, she grew up and attended school in the rural Oswego area. In 1951, Juanita graduated from Labette County Community High School.

On August 26, 1951, Juanita and Gene Carnahan were united in marriage in Altamont. The couple farmed in the Altamont area their entire married lives. Gene preceded her in death on June 2, 1995.

In her earlier years, she attended the Altamont First Baptist Church. She and Gene started square dancing in 1968. They were members of the local Swing and Twirl group and the Northeast Oklahoma Square Dancing Association, even serving as presidents. Juanita was an awesome seamstress, who made everything from the family clothes to the couple’s square-dancing outfits. A dedicated wife and mother, she also enjoyed cooking for her family and camping with them.

Three sons – Terry Carnahan and his wife, Julie, of Laurinburg, North Carolina

Jerry Carnahan and his wife, Cathy, of Mound Valley, Kansas

Roger Carnahan and his wife, Stacie, of Altamont, Kansas

Two daughters – Patty Souders and her husband, Steve, of Chetopa, Kansas

Diane Cranor and her husband, Steve, of Chetopa, Kansas

Nine grandchildren – Crystal Souders; Brian Souders and his wife, Laci; Heidi Sipes and her husband, David; Robby Ashmore and his wife, Jennifer; Johnathan Ashmore and his wife, Johanna; Nate Carnahan; Caitlyn Carnahan; Josh Carnahan; and Kylie Rainwater and her husband, Gavin

Eight great-grandchildren – Stevie Lynn Souders, Madison Sipes, Harper Sipes, Conner Sipes, Jayden Ashmore, Jenna Ashmore, Jolee Ashmore, and Waylon Ashmore

Five step great-grandchildren – Bill Hayes, Joanie Hayes, Bobby Hayes, Emma Phelps, and Isabella Phelps

Three brothers – John Nading and his wife, Carolyn, of Mound Ridge, Kansas

Dallas Nading of Concordia, Kansas

Francis Nading of rural Oswego, Kansas

One sister – Gail Lee and her husband, Albert, of Checotah, Oklahoma

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene; daughter-in-law, Iris Carnahan; son-in-law, Bob Ashmore; one grandson, Scott Souders; three brothers, Jim Nading, Bob Nading, and Alfred Nading; and five sisters-in-law, Doris Nading, Mae Nading, Wilma Nading, Nancy Nading and Marta Nading.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 23, 2021, at the Altamont First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, at the Altamont First Baptist Church. Friends may stop by the church to sign the register after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday.
