Suspect arrested in Pittsburg stabbing, one man injured

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Police arrest a rural Girard man after a stabbing early Sunday morning.

Shortly before 3:00 a.m. on July 18, 2021, Pittsburg police went to Ascension Via Christi after learning a man had been stabbed. The 40-year-old victim had multiple stab wounds to his face and abdomen.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Divisions also responded to help with the investigation.

Investigators spoke with several witnesses. They learned that the stabbing happened in a vehicle on the 400 block of west 6th Street in Pittsburg.

Police identified 50-year-old Jose Flores-Velez as a suspect. Pittsburg Police and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office found him in his home and arrested him Sunday afternoon. Authorities say Flores-Velez had an active arrest warrant out of the county for a bond violation on an original charge of domestic battery.

They are requesting a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in this case. They took him to jail and are holding him without bond.

Investigators executed a search warrant at Flores-Velez’s home. According to the Pittsburg Police Department, they found evidence related to the stabbing.

The hospital treated the victim and later released him. Authorities have not released the victim’s name.
