Summer months mark 100 Deadliest Days for Teen Driving

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The period from Memorial Day to Labor Day are the most dangerous time for teen drivers, with a 21 percent spike in teen traffic fatalities. That means an estimated 1,200 young people will die on our roads this summer. Traffic safety officials often refer to it as “the 100 deadliest days.”

The AAA Foundation of Traffic Safety released a report on new drivers ages 16 and 17. It found they were three times as likely as adults to be involved in a deadly crash during that time period.
more than seven thousand people died in crashes involving teen drivers from 2010 to 2019.

Three factors commonly played a role in these tragedies. According to researchers, 60 percent of teen drivers killed in a crash were not wearing a safety belt. Speeding also was a factor in nearly 30 percent of deadly crashes involving teens. Finally distraction played a role in nearly 60 percent of such crashes.
