Jerry D. Straton

Jerry D. Staton was born on December 28th, 1931 in Winfield, KS and passed away on May 31st, 2021 at his home in Girard, KS. Jerry is survived by his wife of 63+ years, Edwina Gail Gillard Staton; his daughter, Jerri Dawn Staton Totman; his grandson, Ian M. Dungan; his brother, Tom Staton; and several nephews and nieces, cousins, extended family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, five brothers, and one sister.

Jerry lived a big, full life and enjoyed every moment. He had many accomplishments and here are a few: 1949 graduate of Haven High School, Haven, KS; 1952 Golden Gloves Boxing Champion; Marriage to Edwina on June 8th, 1957; Employment at Craw Kan Telephone Cooperative from 1958 until his retirement in 1994; United States Naval Reserves; 60 year member of The Masonic Fraternity, Girard Lodge #93; Crestwood Country Club President 1996; Girard City Government – Elected to City Council April 1985 and April 1987 – Appointed Mayor April 1987 – Elected Mayor April 1989, 1993, 1997, and 2001 – During his 20 years of public service to the City of Girard he was very proud of the City employees, the renovation of the electric power plant, new City Hall, new fire station, new swimming pool, library addition and renovation, economic development, park renovation, industrial park expansion, and golf course renovations.

He loved his family, friends, golf, and cigars in that order. Jerry had a debilitating stroke in 1991. Rehab was difficult and extensive, but he came back strong and had a couple of holes’ in one in the years that followed. He told funny jokes, read books, worked puzzles, taught his daughter how to throw a punch when she was four years old, adored his grandson and obsessed about his lawnmower. True to form, when he was recently asked if he had any regrets he answered, “Nope. Not a one.”

Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday at the Girard Cemetery with Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating. Masonic services will be conducted by the Girard Masonic Lodge No. 93, AF & AM with Military Honors by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Parsons.

Friends may call from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m., Friday and from 9:00 a.m. until noon on Saturday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.

Memorials are suggested to the Girard Medical Center Foundation for the ER Department or the First Christian Church Flag Program and these may be left at the service or the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
