Jean Dolores Tune

Jean Dolores Tune of Miami, OK passed from this life Friday, May 21, 2021 at Quaker Hill Skilled Nursing in Lowell, KS. She was 95.

Jean was born November 15, 1925 in Joplin, MO to Alonzo and Letha (Johnson) Asbell. She had lived in the Miami, OK and Columbus, KS area most of her life. She was a 1944 graduate of Columbus High School. Jean was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Commerce, OK.

Jean was a strong and resourceful wife and mother who saw well to the needs of her family. She was an accomplished seamstress who designed clothing for her daughters, from dresses to swimsuits to wedding gowns. Her needlework skills included quilting and detailed embroidery works. She also fashioned handmade quilts for each of her grandchildren, utilizing the many fabric scraps accumulated during her years of sewing. Jean loved spending time with her family, playing with the grandchildren, growing plants and flowers, bird watching, music, reading and collecting books.

Jean was active in church from the time of her salvation as a young teenager. Her first church was the Missionary Baptist Church in Treece, Kansas, where she and her late husband, Richard Lee Tune, served until the 1980’s when they moved from Kansas to Miami, Oklahoma and joined the Commerce First Baptist Church. Over the years, she attended WMU taught Sunday School and worked in many Vacation Bible Schools. Her activities in the church were curtailed when she became a full-time caregiver to her beloved husband after he suffered a massive stroke. Amazingly, at the age of 60, having never learned to drive a car, when it became necessary in order to care for Richard, she was courageous enough to learn, passing her drivers test with flying colors. She survived thirty years after his passing and continued to enjoy her many interests. Jean could often be found swinging on her porch and enjoying God’s creation. She was greatly loved by her family and will be missed immeasurably. It is a great comfort to know she lives on in the eternal city of God.

Jean married Richard Lee Tune in 1944 and he preceded her in death in 1991. She was also preceded by her parents, 3 brothers, Paul Asbell, Robert Asbell and William Asbell and 3 sisters, Beatrice Johnson, Virginia Ernest and Bonnie Zaccarello.

Jean is survived by 4 daughters, Marilyn Hale and her husband Paul of Coweta, OK, Joyce Pace and her husband Mike of Columbus, KS, Liz Ketcher and her husband Russell of Vinita, OK and Janet Alsbaugh of Saint Charles, IL, 1 brother, Larry Asbell of Miami, OK, 1 sister, Phyllis Stogsdill of Lee’s Summit, MO, 7 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and several great great-grandchildren.
