Ellen Grace Cunningham, 61, of Pittsburg, died at 7:52 a.m., Sunday, May 9, 2021 at her residence in Pittsburg.
Ellen was born June 15, 1959 at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri, the daughter of Frank Mitchell and Eunice Juanita (Newport) VanKam. She attended grade school in Weir and graduated from Southeast High School in Cherokee. She attended Pittsburg State University for classes related to her work as a CNA, CMA, CAD, and CSSD. Ellen worked at Laidler’s Nursing Home in Pittsburg in 1977.
Ellen married Roger L. Cunningham on December 3, 1977 in the First Baptist Church in Pittsburg. Roger preceded her in death on March 28, 2016.
Ellen worked at the Heritage Nursing Home, now Medicalodge of Girard, for over 27 years where she was very devoted to helping all the residents in any way she could before retiring in November of 2020.
She enjoyed her grandchildren, working with the elderly, Karaoke, and her furry babies, her cat, Agatha, and her dog, Maggie Mae.
Survivors are her son, Shawn L. Cunningham (Crista) of Pittsburg; her daughter, Angela Cunningham of Pittsburg; her grandchildren, Blake A. Cunningham, Jason L. Cunningham, Grace E. Cunningham, Chloe J. C. Reynolds; her brothers, Frank VanKam (Teddi Lynn) of Pittsburg and Mitchell J. VanKam (Tori) of Spring Hill; her aunt, Wilma Newport of Pittsburg; her uncle, Louis Newport (Florence) of Shawnee.
Memorial services will be announced for later in the summer.
Memorials are suggested to an Education Fund for Ellen’s grandchildren and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
