Bernice Gail Laurie

COLUMBUS, KANSAS: Bernice Gail Laurie, age 74, passed away at 10:54 pm, Thursday, April 29, 2021 at her home following an illness.

Bernice was born January 31, 1947 in Fairland, OK. Her parents were Woodrow Alfred and Laura Susan (Cunningham) Hurley. She had lived on SW 90th St since 2014.

Bernice had lived in Cherokee County most of her life, living in Scammon before moving to Hallowell. She attended grade school at West Mineral and Columbus High School where she graduated with the class of 1965. She had worked at Glenberry’s Garment Factory in Oswego for a few years, but spent most of her life as a homemaker.

She was known as an excellent cook and loved to bake. She sold several pies and baked goods at Boccia Convenient Store in West Mineral, KS. She loved to fish and play BINGO.

Bernice was married to Willis Wayne Laurie on February 5, 1968 in Miami, OK. He preceded her in death July, 11, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter, Michalla Getman, one great-grandson, Mason, Webber, and one sister, Lela Juanita Lynn.

Surviving is one daughter, Anita Kay Getman, husband Jack, Columbus; three brothers, Steven Keith Hurley, Fairland, OK, Daniel Woodrow Hurley, and Billy Jack Hurley, both of Oswego, KS; one sister, Patricia Ann Hurley, Chetopa, KS; two grandchildren, Tyler Getman (Valerie Groover) and Ashleigh Getman, all of Columbus; four great-grandchildren, Makayla Getman and Morgan Getman, both of Parsons, KS and Abigail Goff and C J Reed, both of Columbus; and her longtime friend from the 1st grade, Ruby (Jim) Schlichting.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS. Jim Irwin will officiate. Burial will be in McKee Cemetery, Hallowell, KS.
