CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. – Cherokee County authorities say they discovered two Joplin men in a strip pit northwest of Columbus.

Then men, identified as 70-year-old Robert Sleep and 71-year-old Stephen Lemasters, fell through the ice and drowned according to a release from the Cherokee County Sherrif’s office.

The families of the men reported the two missing after they didn’t return from a fishing trip.

Authorities say they do not suspect foul play, but autopsies will be conducted in Kansas City.
