Preliminary Missouri report says traffic fatalities went up in 2020

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – A report from the Missouri Highway Patrol says the state experienced its highest number of traffic fatalities since 2007.

Preliminary reporting for 2020 shows Missouri traffic fatalities increased by 12% compared to the previous year. 989 lives were lost in traffic crashes in 2020 up from 881 in 2019. That number includes 126 pedestrian deaths, the highest number in state history.

All this, despite a lower number of cars on the highway due to the pandemic. The report says there were notable increases in unbuckled and speed related fatalities.
