Grant awarded to help protect part of Carthage battlefield

A Civil War battlefield described as the place where “the first serious conflict between the United States troops and the rebels” took place just got a six-figure preservation boost. The National Park Service on Monday announced a grant of $105,075 awarded to the Jasper County Commission for an easement that will help protect 180 acres that are part of the 1861 battlefield.
